About the author

Chris CharlwoodChris Charlwood holds a Bachelor of Commerce Honours (BCOMM) business degree with a specialty in Marketing Strategy from Queen's University at Kingston (Ontario, Canada – Grad 1993). Before starting Charlwood eMarketing in 1999, Chris spent several years in senior marketing and management roles with private and non-profit companies including The Heart & Stroke Foundation, Alberto-Culver International, The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and VeriSign Inc.. Chris ran his first e-mail marketing program for CIBC in 1997 to promote the launch of CIBC PC Banking. Back then, open rates averaged over 50%, and click-through rates were in the 10% to 20% range. With new US and Canadian legislation introduced in 2004 and the proliferation of SPAM and e-mail clutter as well as more advanced e-mail filtering software, lots has changed. That said, basic e-mail marketing principals remain the same.
